How you spend your time in the morning can set the tone for your entire day and there are 3 questions that you must ask yourself if you want to create your day on purpose.

 

Most of the time we wake up exhausted and then hit the snooze button multiple times.

When we do finally get our eyes open, we grab our phones and jump on Facebook or check our email.

Then we climb out of bed to race around and try to do way too many things without enough time.

We rush through coffee or tea and we make food choices that don’t fuel our bodies properly.

Sometimes we’re grumpy. We snap at family members or they snap at us. We rush off to start our day.

And we feel frantic and scattered. Already behind schedule and racing to catch up.

The day goes on and then we get up and repeat it all over again the next day.

No wonder we are exhausted? It makes sense that we feel so overwhelmed.

Here is a simple strategy to ease the exhaustion and overwhelm.

It starts with a simple morning routine.

Most of us miss the opportunity to take a little quality time for ourselves.

To reflect. To plan. To set an intention.

Take 5-10 minutes to create the day that you want.

A simple morning routine can have a powerful effect on how you show up during the day.

It can literally make all the difference in helping you create a day lived on purpose versus a day that happens by default.

 

Here is your simple guide to creating your morning routine:

Set your alarm for 15 minutes earlier tomorrow morning.

Place a journal or notebook and pen next to your alarm.

Write a message to yourself on an index card or small piece of paper – this should be a motivating message that will remind you why you are changing your schedule and giving yourself a little extra time in the morning to focus on you. (It can be something like “This is important” or “This matters to me” or “I want to start my day feeling good”). Finally, place this note on top of the journal, so you see it in the morning.

Get up when your alarm goes off. Stay in bed or find a quiet place in the house.

Take a few minutes to think about what kind of day you want to have.

Then, answer these 3 questions in your journal or notebook:

What do I need to do to have this kind of day?

What do I need to feel to make these things happen?

What do I want to think to feel this way?

Read them over a few times to commit them to memory.

There is so much power in those three little questions.

They will help you go from reacting and responding to your day to creating the day you want on purpose.

Directing your mind first thing in the morning will also set you up for feeling clear and intentioned about all your decisions, which will eliminate the exhaustion and overwhelm that you have been experiencing.

The Most Powerful Question

Sometimes I just can’t make sense of myself.
I forget what I am doing.
I get really distracted.
I say one thing and actually mean something else.
I decide, then change my mind, then re-decide, then change my mind again.
And so on.
It’s messy.
And awkward.
I say “no” a lot.
I’m uncertain.
And I’m pretty sure that I seem very confusing to everyone around me.

Then other times, I am really efficient.
I’m organized for my day.
I’m on time.
Productive.
I have clear intentions and I follow through.
I create everything on purpose.
I am unstoppable.
I accomplish small things and I accomplish big things.
Time is on my side.
Anything is possible.

So, what is really going on here?
How can I be one person and have such diverse ways of behaving in my life?

The answer is simple and complicated.

It’s feelings. The answer is always – feelings.

Everything we do or don’t do is based on how we feel.
I will say that again just to really make a point here.
The way we behave and the action we take (or don’t take) is based on how we feel.
Feelings drive all of our actions.

If this is how it works, then it becomes imperative that we are able to identify what we are feeling to understand our behavior.

Which leads me to the question that we can always ask ourselves.

Why am I doing / not doing ________ right now?

And the answer always has to be a feeling.

It is not always easy to locate that feeling. But that feeling is the source of all our action or inaction. And that feeling is always the only answer.

If you can figure out what you feel and understand it is the reason you do or don’t do something, then you are getting to close to understanding yourself and taking responsibility for yourself.

If you want to ask yourself the question: Why am I doing / not doing ________ right now?

The answer will never sound like these:

I have to.
They are expecting me to do this.
I made a promise.
He will be mad at me if I don’t do this.
What will they say if I do it?
She wants me to.
This is a waste of my time.
I don’t know how to do this.
What will they think if I don’t do it?
I can’t wait to get started.

These answers are all thoughts. They are not feelings.

The correct answer to your question will be one-word answers like this.
Because I feel…

Bored
Excited
Irritated
Motivated
Happy
Confused
Afraid
Inspired
Conflicted
Calm

Feelings tell you EVERYTHING. They tell you exactly what is going on in your mind and the thoughts that you are creating. They explain your behavior and give you the control to makes changes in what you do/don’t do. Your feelings are your responsibility. No one else creates them. And you get to feel whatever you want. It is just so important to understand that everything you do and don’t do, is based on a feeling. That is powerful.

So, as you head into this week, can you get curious about your behavior?

Can you notice what you are doing or not doing?

How are you acting? Or reacting?

Then ask yourself the question. Why am I doing / not doing ________ right now?

Find the answer inside your feelings. What does that feeling tell you about you? What thoughts are creating that feeling? Do you like the feeling? Do you want to keep the feeling? Do you want a new feeling? Are others thoughts available to you that will inspire a new feeling?

You always have way more power and control over things that you think you do, so get comfortable with connecting to what you are feeling. It will tell you everything you need to know about yourself. And from there, you can decide to stay the course or make changes if you want to be behaving and acting in a new way. The choice is always yours.

Let Go Of Tolerations.

Many of us have learned how to live with settling and suffering. We forget that suffering is optional and that we all have the ability to end our own suffering by giving up the things we tolerate and put up with in our lives. Whether it’s tolerating a difficult relationship, lack of money, a messy home, a bad job or just living a life that is not desirable, we all do it to some degree.

WHAT ARE YOU TOLERATING?

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you procrastinate on small tasks like clearing the clutter at home or getting organized at work?
  • Do you postpone making important appointments for yourself?
  • Are you tolerating being too busy to make time to be with your friends?
  • Are you postponing doing things that you know would contribute to your happiness or success?
  • Are you tolerating a relationship that makes you feel stuck?

When you put off a task that could easily or even not so easily be accomplished, it only prolongs the inevitable and then it starts to feel like an awful chore. Something that could be taken care of in less than fifteen minutes – like booking a doctor’s appointment – turns into an all-day process because it becomes a constant, all day long distraction. Your thoughts return to it over and over. You sit down to do one thing and your mind drifts back to making that appointment. When we postpone and procrastinate, we sabotage everything else we do. We tell ourselves all kinds of reasons why we can’t make the doctor’s appointment. We make excuses. We make ourselves feel guilty or badly for not following through. We create our own suffering, again.

When these burdens accumulate, you give them power to completely overwhelm you. An abundance of toleration and distractions keeps you from taking action in all areas of your life and towards your true goals. Having too much to do frequently leads to stagnation because it becomes hard to decide where to start. I want to share with you that today is the perfect day to begin taking action and to stop tolerating.

This week, think about the things you’re tolerating in your life and write them down. Decide to eliminate one toleration now. You will feel relief instantly and will free up your thoughts and energy to focus on the bigger tasks in your day. Go into the rest of your week deciding to eliminate a small toleration every day. When you remove tolerations and distractions, you open yourself up to the possibility of doing more of the things you love. You will choose action and results over procrastination and suffering. You will build momentum giving up small tolerations, to then eventually take action on your bigger tolerations. You’ll be amazed at how good it feels and how empowering this sense of accomplishment can be.

Do It Differently

If you are like me, then it’s likely that you are heading into a normal day of routine and predictability. A full schedule. A long to-do list. Making sure that everyone else’s needs are met. And perhaps already managing your expectations that once again, you might not achieve the results that you truly desire for yourself today. That somehow your own life is not within your control and whatever happens today, happens and you will just figure out how to deal with it.

And chances are that today is a lot like yesterday and the day before that and the day before that. Same thought patterns and same results.

 

So, how do we begin to break a cycle like this? How do ensure that we get the results that we want and create time for the things that matter to us?

The good news is that we do not have to wait for circumstances (the job, the family, the to-do list) to change in order to experience new results. We don’t have to wait to lose the weight, fall in love, or earn more money in order to create the results that we want. Results are generated by the thoughts we think, not by circumstances. Plain and simple. And that is incredible, because it means that get to take full responsibility for our lives. We decide what we think, which affects how we feel, which inspires action, which creates our results.

Positive thoughts always create positive results. That knowledge is so powerful.

So when I find myself in a results rut, I know that I need to change my thinking and here’s how I do it.

First, I focus on a new result that I want for myself and why I want it. Getting connected to the ‘why’ gives us so much information to work with.

Then ask myself these questions.

What do I need to do in order to create this new result?
What do I need to feel in order to create this new result?
What do I need to think in order to create this new result?

Breaking old patterns and cycles doesn’t happen on it’s own. And it doesn’t happen while we wait for the world or people around us to change. Creating new results begins with working in our minds and no one can do that work for us. It’s an inside job.
